A Route 66 improvement project in Joplin will continue this week with storm sewer, pavement, utility and traffic-signal work along 7th Street, the Missouri Department of Transportation said in an Oct. 5 update.

The contractor is installing storm sewer on the north side of 7th Street between Highland and Patterson avenues and replacing pavement on the north half of the road between McConnell and Ozark avenues, according to MoDOT. Florida Avenue is closed on both sides of 7th Street for pavement replacement, traffic-signal infrastructure and a temporary traffic shift, the department said.

MoDOT said Missouri American Water is relocating and connecting a water line on the north side of 7th Street between Virginia and Pennsylvania avenues. Liberty Electric is preparing for relocation work between St. Louis Avenue and Murphy Boulevard and coordinating light-pole relocations between Main Street and Virginia Avenue, according to the update. The City of Joplin is doing sanitary sewer work on Kentucky Avenue north of 7th Street and plans night work for a pipe crossing under 7th Street at Kentucky Avenue starting Monday, Oct. 5, MoDOT said.

The department said at least one lane will remain open in each direction on 7th Street, business access will be maintained during operating hours, and there will be no signed detours. Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone, according to MoDOT. Weather or scheduling conflicts could change the work schedule, the department said.
