How does recycling work in Joplin, MO, and what can go in the bin?

Joplin curbside recycling is an optional subscription through Republic Services: a 96-gallon cart is collected every other week. Put recyclables loose in the cart—no sorting is needed—and make sure they are empty, clean, and dry; set the cart out before 6 a.m. on collection day, with 3 feet of space around it and the lid fully closed. The City’s page lists paper (mail, newspaper, office paper, magazines); cardboard, paper bags, clean-out pizza boxes, and egg cartons; #1 and #2 plastic bottles, jugs, tubs, and jars; and clean food and beverage cans, clean foil and pie pans, and empty aerosol cans as accepted. Glass, plastic bags, Styrofoam, food, batteries, electronics, yard waste, and other listed items are not accepted in the curbside cart. Curbside service costs $5.26 per month; residents can instead bring recyclables and household hazardous waste to the Recycling Center at 1310 West A Street, where most drop-offs are free (TVs and computer monitors have a $10 fee).
